a) September 1979 – June 1984: student at the Novosibirsk State University (Mathematics Department), Novosibirsk, Russia. Main subject: general mathematical courses. Graduated with honours.

b) September 1984 – September 1987: postgraduate student at the Institute of Mathematics of Siberian Branch of the Academy of Science of the USSR. Main subject: combinatorial and geometric group theory. Graduated with presentation of Ph.D. thesis.
